The EU's New Packaging Rules: What They Mean for You (and How Notpla Can Help)
March 28, 2025
Let's break down the PPWR rules, when they take effect, and how Notpla's seaweed-based solutions can help you stay ahead of the curve.
What's Changing with the PPWR?
The PPWR is reshaping how we think about packaging entirely:
All packaging must be recyclable by 2030
Packaging that can't be effectively recycled will be banned. From 2035, at least 55% of packaging materials must be recovered (30% for wood).
PFAS and Bisphenol A ban by 2026
Food contact packaging containing these harmful chemicals will be phased out.
Stricter compostability standards by 2026
Tightening compostability standards and prevent microplastic contamination in compost through scientifically verified, complete biodegradation of packaging materials.
Single-use plastic bans from 2030
Dine-in settings (hotels, restaurants, cafés) will need to go plastic-free
Condiment sachets and miniature toiletry bottles will disappear from the market
Refill and reuse targets
By 2030, food and beverage operators must offer 10% of products in reusable formats
Customers will have the right to bring their own containers for takeaways
The writing's on the wall: recyclable, compostable, and reusable solutions are becoming the industry standard.

Your PPWR Timeline
Here's when these changes will affect your business:
2026 - PFAS and Bisphenol A banned in food contact packaging
Single-use plastic bans take effect for dine-in settings and condiment sachets
2035 - Packaging must be recycled at scale, with material recovery targets kicking in
Now's the time to start rethinking your packaging strategy—not when the deadlines are looming.
How to Stay Ahead of the Regulations
Meeting the PPWR standards means businesses need to:
Switch to recyclable packaging
Eliminate harmful chemicals
Invest in compostable and reusable solutions
Rethink single-use
Where Notpla Can Help
At Notpla, we've always believed in better packaging for a better planet and now regulation is catching up with what nature already knows. Our seaweed-based solutions already meet or exceed the PPWR standards:
Recyclable packaging that works with nature
Our coated takeaway boxes blend seamlessly into paper and cardboard recycling streams, making compliance with the 2030 recyclability mandate simple and effortless (Tested to EN 13430 & fully recyclable in UK/EU paper recycling facilities)
Home-compostable by design
Unlike conventional packaging that lingers for centuries, our materials fully degrade in just 4-6 weeks, returning nutrients to the soil where they belong (Passed both the French NF T51-800 and Australian AS 5810 standards)
PFAS-free from day one
While others scramble to reformulate before the 2026 ban, our packaging has always been PFAS-free, because we follow nature's lead, not chemical shortcuts
Ready-made solutions for the HORECA sector
As single-use plastic bans approach, our takeaway boxes offer an immediate, compliant alternative that delights both customers and the planet
